Many do not, which means they are wasting a great opportunity for several reasons.

Often internal audit is so busy just getting work done that they don't take time to think strategically or over a time horizon of longer than next quarter or next year. As such, succession planning is usually something that gets ignored, when you could be using it strategically.

In this video I share reasons why having a succession plan, and communicating it well, are so important for the long term strategy of the function and the moral of the internal audit team. I share some war stories about how organizations have done this well, and what we can learn from other's mistakes.

I also discuss the practical side of succession planning for smaller and larger audit teams.
