Exposing The Positives and Skills for New Internal Auditors
by Shawn Resaulsingh - Internal Auditor, JMMB Bank
IF I Was told this... for New Internal Auditors.
Most people hear the Internal Auditors are coming and they lose their minds.
Misconceptions have surfaced that Internal Auditors are the police and we should be scared, but Internal Auditors are heroes trying their best to prevent mishaps, miscalculations, and mistakes in all angles within the company.
Picture this, an accidental typo of a sales figure could cause a massive problem to all employees’ bonus, but an internal audit hero shows up and spots the mistake, with compassion mentions to the team, who corrects the mishap. Now everyone is happy again that there will be a bonus.
What did this hero do to save that bonus, The Auditors:
- Conducted research both primary and secondary,
- Analyzed the data,
- Became curious and asked questions, and
- Provided training for weak areas identified.
I mentioned they are like heroes. Well Internal Auditors are close to Batman but operate more as a Sherlock Holmes because they talk with a keyboard or pen, not their fist.
Still not grasping what these heroes do, well what takes Internal Auditors to the next level besides having excellent research skills, unbelievable data analytical skills, insane type writing skills, presentation skills, (i.e. Communication Skills). They also possess emotional intelligence, control the flow of the conversation, and the characteristics to be insanely calm within close out meetings. These make them seem like the heroes they are.
If you are searching for what an Internal Auditor is, or are starting to become one, this article summarizes what soft skills are needed to carry you to the next level of your training or simply give an insight into what Internal Auditors do daily.
Skills for New Internal Auditors Summary:
